NR serial console port pinout

All NR products have the same underlying serial port console configuration and differ only in port density (example: NR4416 has 16 serial ports, while NR4448 has 48).

The serial ports provide a RS232 DTE configuration over an RJ45 connector and has a software selectable pinout switch that allow you to trivially switch between Cisco straight or Avocent/Cyclades straight. The advantage of the Gearlinx pinout configuration is that our customers and IT administrators only ever need a conventional straight through RJ45 cable for their devices.

Each RS232 serial port supports the following pinouts:

RJ45 Female PinCisco Straight Pinout Signal (Default)Avocent/Cyclades Pinout Signal (Software Selectable)
1CTSRTS
2DSRDTR
3RXDTXD
4GNDGND
5Not connectedCTS
6TXDRXD
7DTRDCD
8RTSDSR

In addition to the software selectable serial ports mentioned above, each NR product has one (1) additional local serial console port (RJ45) that provides users with command line access. This local console has a hardware switchable pinout, with the up position selecting Cisco pinout, and the down selection selecting the Avocent/Cyclades pinout.
